Design Concepts –Skilled Nursing Facilities

- Our primary goal in designing Skilled Nursing Facilities is to "de-institutionalize" them and provide a homelike environment. Whether we are designing a new facility or renovating a nursing unit, we view the whole as "the sum of its parts". By emphasizing the "parts", a human scale is created allowing residents to better relate to their environment.
- This approach can also be applied to the massing of a building where a large building block can be "broken-up" into smaller elements and imbued with residential shapes and materials to imply a series of Town Houses.
- The "parts" concept can also be used to decentralize dining and recreational areas on a nursing unit to provide spatial variety and promote resident choice.
